The Becca

Why dasbecca and the start of a blog

When I was 11, my mom introduced me to a text editor. This was back in the day when Geocities first opened its doors, and only big companies had their own domain names. I was smitten. I started writing down my daily life as a way of sorting through it– I was a teenager, and it was a coping mechanism for my eating disorder or my school issues. Then, when I got married and moved out, it was a way of documenting my new life with Jason. In high school, people would occasionally call me “The Becca”. And I was born in Germany; so somehow it morphed into the more Deutsch “Das Becca”. It seemed like a great domain name: short and easy to remember. I bought the domain in the spring of 2003, shortly after the birth of my first child.

Now I do it for a mix of those reasons– coping and documenting. I like the people I meet through this site, I like looking back and remembering stories I would have forgotten otherwise. I like the challenge of sitting at the keyboard each night and typing something up to commemorate the day. I like the constant project. Most importantly, if anything happens to me, I like my children knowing what kind of person I was, and how important they were to me.
